Portrait of the painter François-André Vincent, 1811, Black stone, sanguine and white chalk on paper, marouflaged on his montage. 20.2 x 16.1 cm. (sheet) 27.1 x 21.7 cm. (montage) Signed and dated, lower left: M Gabrielle Capet 1811 Annotated, on the back of the montage: François André Vincent Painter/Member of the Institute and the Legion of Honour;/Professor at the Special Schools of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Paris. Teacher of drawing at the Ecole Impériale Polytechnique, member of several learned societies, etc.: born in Paris on 30 December 1746. Drawn by Miss Marie Gabrielle Capet in Paris in 1811. Annotated, on the back of the framed cardboard: A la mémoire/De françois, andré, Vincent,/Peintre d'histoire/Member of the institute and of the Legion of Honor/Born in Paris on 30 Xbre 1747 [sic]/Deceased in Paris on 3 August 1816 [sic] is 69 years old./Placed by their relatives/in the first rank of the members of the painting /of whom he was one of the restorers,/he honoured him/by the loyalty of his soul and the loyalty of his character/he made him loved/by the graces [....] of his spirit;/he served him/by the ardour of his zeal for art and artists/by the authority of his eloquent reason and courage./This is the right image/that is rendered to his memory/by his numerous pupils/of whom he was the friend, the [...], the father, and in all things,/the model./by Mr. Lucas. Presented in an Empire period setting. Provenance: - Preserved by the artist until his death in 1818. - Bequeathed by the artist, in his will dated 20 October 1818, to Mademoiselle Victoire Perrier: "I give and bequeath to Madlle.
