Anne-Louis GIRODET-TRIOSON (1767-1824)
The angel of God stands in the way of Balaam's donkey (Numbers, 22, 21-33) Pen and black ink, grey wash, on paper (D&CBlauw watermark) 24 x 34 cm. Annotated, top left: Invention by Girodet drawn on June 29, 1780. Annotated, on the back: (Girodet was almost a child)/ drawing by Girodet Trioson/preserved in his family/and taken from the collection/ Mr Pannetier/Liénard Our drawing, however illustrating a little-known biblical episode, is due to the already alert hand of a Girodet, then aged 13. It is said to be his very first known drawing. The annotation on the back of the drawing is certainly due to the hand of Edouard Liénard (1779-1848), a fellow student of Girodet's in David's studio, whose descendants donated to the BnF, in 1879, a notebook of Roman sketches by Girodet (BnF, RESERVE DC-48 (C)-4). As for the other person cited in the note, Antoine-Claude Pannetier (1772-1859), a friend and pupil of Girodet, he had the initiative and responsibility for publishing the Aeneid after the death of his friend. Provenance : From the attic of the Countess of X... (born around 1930), a member of a family of enlightened amateurs, having assiduously attended the distinguished sales of the Hôtel Drouot in the years 1880-1910.
