JOUBERT, Pierre (1910-2002)
The Jeanne d'Arc, (ex Resolue), helicopter carrier of the Navy. Gouache on drawing paper (1966). Total dimensions: 26,5x36 cm - Dimensions drawing only: 17x29,9 cm. Signed, from a series of 12 gouaches illustrating existing or former ships, for the monographs of the Friends of the Musée de la Marine, made between 1962 and 1968, of which 8 have survived. These are among Joubert's most beautiful pure seascapes (without figures), and from this period one encounters almost nothing by the author on this theme. It is particularly difficult to give life to these modern ships and warships, especially as these are real ships, and commissioned works, asked of one who could have accepted to become an official painter of the navy and signed with the small dedicated anchor, if he had not modestly declined this offer on several occasions, preferring to preserve his creative freedom. This type of representation is very easily flat, artificial. The essential difficulty is to breathe life into them. The result here is dazzling, as much in the ability to break the straight lines of modern buildings by an absolute mastery of the lights which break their rigidity, as in the technical representation of which the author had an exceptional knowledge, and the realistic feeling of the sea which is admirable. These three qualities are extremely rare to find in a single hand.
