Francecso TIRONI (actif vers 1775-1785)
The Grand Canal, with the Bembo and Vendramin Calergi palaces, circa 1780. Pen and brown ink, grey wash some white highlights. 28 x 49.5 cm. Watermark: C and I Honig and Lille de Starsbourg (Churchil 329) Our sheet is part of a series of views of the Grand Canal drawn by Francesco Tironi. We know of eight other leaves, of the same technique and size, six of which are kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum (see Ward-Jackson, "Italian Drawings Volume II 17th-18th century" Victoria and Albert Museum Catalogue, London, 1980, p.180-182) and one at the National Gallery in Washington (1956.9.17). Our sheet completes the series of views that the visitor could admire on arriving in Venice from the Terraferma. We thank Mrs. Bozena Anna Kowalczyk for confirming the authenticity of this drawing from a photograph. A certificate dated 17 November 2020 will be given to the purchaser.
