* [BOTANY] - SWARTZ Olof Peter. Icones plantarum... - Lot 154 - Coutau-Bégarie
* [BOTANY] - SWARTZ Olof Peter. Icones plantarum incognitarum qvas in India Occidentali, published by Erlanger, Johann Jacob Palm, 1794-[1801]. Set of 13 large, delicately hand-coloured engraved plates, out of text, unbound, from the referenced work, folio (435 x 235 mm), with title page, table of contents (lists 25 numbered species, but this copy contains what was published) and description of the first 9 plates. Binding missing, foxing, plates folded and reinforced at the fold. History: these plates are from the first and only edition illustrating 13 Jamaican plants, of which only 9 are described by the author, the Swedish botanist Olof Peter Swartz (1760-1818), who had drawn some 200 plants during his journey through the West Indies. Stafleu & Cowan cite correspondence indicating that plates 1-6 were published in 1794 and plates 7-13 in 1801, so he describes the work as two published instalments containing plates 1-6 and 7-13, and a planned third instalment, never published, which would have contained plates 14-25. But all nine descriptions appear on sheet B (although B2 is printed as A2), with the description of species 5 beginning on sheet B1 and ending on A2, so the nine descriptions could not have been published in two separate installments. In any case, the descriptions of species 10-25 and the 12 plates for species 14-25 were never published.
