MOREAU Jean-Michel, dit le Jeune (1741-1814).
Reform of justice. Wash and gouache, signed lower right, preserved under glass in its original gilded wood frame decorated with palmettes. Bears at the bottom of the drawing a later inscription "8 May 1788". Good condition. Sight: H.: 8.5 cm - W.: 6 cm. Frame: H.: 21.5 cm - W.: 18 cm. History: On May 8, 1788, during the reign of Louis XVI, the Keeper of the Seals Chrétien-François II de Lamoignon and the Controller General of Finance Étienne Charles Loménie de Brienne attempted an ambitious reform of justice. On their initiative, the Parliament met in plenary session in the presence of the King. During the course of this lit de justice, Louis XVI took away the parliamentarians' right of remonstrance and entrusted the right of registration to a plenary court. He also brought justice closer to the plaintiffs by creating 47 courts known as "grands bailliages" and abolished the preliminary question (torture). This reform, which came too late, did not save the monarchy. It did, however, demonstrate the liberal spirit of the members of the government.
