[LIBRARY OF PHILIPPE V OF SPAIN]. TACITUS Corneille. New translation of two works by Corneille Tacitus printed by Anisson & Posuel, Lyon, 1706, in-4° (190 x 125 mm), 191 pages, red edges, contemporary calf binding decorated on both boards with the arms of Philip V of Spain and at each corner with a fleur-de-lys, spine decorated with gold designs, red calf title-piece with title in gold letters, illustrated in the opening with a portrait of the author, a folded map of ancient Germany and a map of England. Time wear, as is. Provenance: Philip V, King of Spain, 1683-1746. Grandson of Louis XIV, he was chosen as heir by Charles II and became king of Spain in 1700. He was responsible for founding the Royal Library of Spain, making available to the public the books of his predecessors, as well as those he brought back from France on his accession to the throne.
