GEORGE BARBIER (1882-1932)
Ballets russes, 1911 Rare broken bone fan painted with a scene in the taste of the Russian ballets: in a garden, an oriental offers a rose to an elegant woman protected by a parasol. Signed and dated on the right "G. Barbier 1911". The subject is to be compared with "The Persian Comedy" of Georges Lepape. It evokes perhaps one of the Russian ballets like "The spectre of the rose" (1911) or "Scheherazade" (1910). The head covered with brown scales**. Reverse side painted with golden stars on a blue-green background. Metallic clasp and tassel with blue and orange trimmings, original. H.t. 21,5 cm (accident to a strand, wear, both plumes missing) NB. Although not included in the catalogue "L'éventail et la fourrure chez Paquin", this fan is to be compared with those created for the Paquin company, of which each model was made on bone in five copies. It also has a tassel identical to the two previous fans. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) has this composition painted on skin and mounted on bone strands, executed for the Paquin house and published by Maquet (acc. nub. 2013.175)
