View of Rome, ca. 1870 Folded fan, the buff silk sheet painted with a broad panoramic view of Rome from the hills, with the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and Bernini's colonnade. Among yellow and orange roses, and grasses, monogrammed "TW" for Therese Weber in the center. Therese Weber (1813-1875), German painter and botanist, was one of the most renowned of her time. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned her to make many fans for presents. He offered 50 of them to his mother Marie, each with a European city view, now very rare. Dull reverse. Handwritten in ink on the left "N°32" referring to the collection of Princess Therese of Bavaria (1850-1925). Brown tortoiseshell** frame. H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 13,5 cm (small stains, slight lack of plume) Provenance: Sothebys sale, 17 December 2008, "Property from Royal and noble families".
