The Brave Timoclée before Alexander, ca. 1800-1820
Paper fan leaf. Ink and wash drawing. Seated on a throne erected in the countryside, Alexander in cuirass brings before him the young Timoclea, presented to him by two soldiers.
Handwritten caption in border "Timoclea (sic) brought before Alexander". The story of Timoclea is told by Plutarch in "The Courageous Actions of Women": raped by a captain of Alexander the Great's armies, she throws him into a well. Arrested and brought before Alexander, he pardoned her for having avenged herself of the odious outrages she had suffered.
