The Malbrough Song, ca. 1785-1790 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper engraved on a wine-red background and enhanced with gouache. Three cartels illustrate the story of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, at the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, made popular by Malbrough's song. On the left, Marlborough going to war, on the right the page announcing his death to his wife, and in the center his burial. On the reverse, the 19 verses of Malbrough's song, notably sung by the nursemaid of the dauphin of France, and sung in "Le Mariage de Figaro" by Beaumarchais (1781). Brown wood mounting. H.t. 28 cm-H.f. 13 cm (small cuts in the leaf) 300/400 161. A member of the Directoire, circa 1799-1800 Cardboard hand screen illustrated on both sides with a gouache heightened engraving of a member of the Executive Directory in official costume, inspired by the models of the painter Jacques-Louis David. In the taste of the engravings of the "Costumes of the constituted authorities" engraved by Bonneville in particular. Turned wooden handle. H.t. 40,5 cm
