The secret of the alchemist, circa 1750 Amazing folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English style, and painted with gouache. On a background in imitation of a lapis lazuli stone, an alchemist with his assistant in a laboratory. On the left, trompe-l'oeil with bundles of goods (one marked "Russia Castor") and two monkeys attempting a scientific experiment. On the right, a Chinese man against a background of trompe-l'oeil wood grain, and the cover of a book with a partial title: "Method for finding the secret (...)". The composition is based on the address card of the English pharmacist Richard Siddall, practising near Hay-Market, selling "all sorts of drugs" in the 1750s. The original composition is by Jacques de Lajoue, engraved by Cochin (1738). On the reverse side, a lover plays with vials, scientific laboratory flasks. Ivory* mount finely pierced with foliage and scrolls, and painted with chinoisant decoration. H.t. 29,2 cm-H.f. 14,5 cm (wear of the leaf, stains, restorations)
