RZEWUSKI ALEX-CESLAS (1893-1983)
Portrait of Nancy Clare Cunard (1896-1965). Drypoint enhanced with color and white chalk on old japanese paper, signed lower left in pencil by the artist. Plate extracted from the album n° 3 on an edition numbered 10 copies, published in Paris in 1925. Good condition. H.: 35, 5 cm - W.: 28, 5 cm. History: Nancy Cunard, born in England, comes from a wealthy family, whose family values she rejects. Poet and essayist, she militates against racism and fascism. She became the muse of many writers and artists of the 1920s and 1930s, including Tristan Tzara, Louis Aragon and Ernest Hemingway, one of her lovers. His mother, Lady Cunard, née Alice Burke (1872-1948), was a key figure in the Café Society and the muse of Paris in the Roaring Twenties; she was American and of rather obscure origin. Heiress of her mother's lover's fortune, she made her place in British high society after marrying Sir Bache Cunard. A great patron of the arts, she was also the mistress of the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham.
