BEAUTIFUL SET OF WORKS BY ALEX-CESLAS RZEWUSKI (1893-1983) A Polish-Russian aristocrat bearing one of the greatest names in Poland, Alex-Ceslas Rzewuski is in St. Petersburg a privileged witness to the last splendours of the Imperial Court of Russia. Ruined by the Bolshevik revolution and forced into exile, he reached Italy via Czechoslovakia and arrived alone in France in the spring of 1919. In Paris he quickly made a name for himself as an illustrator and collaborated with the most important magazines of the time, in France and Great Britain: "Femina", "la Gazette du bon ton", "Sketch", "Punch", "The London Illustrated News", "Ève", etc. However, it was as a portraitist (using the drypoint technique like Paul-César Helleu) that he soon made an international reputation. He will even pass for one of the most expensive artists of the moment, becoming the official portrait painter of the fledgling Café Society. Close to the Russian circles of high emigration, he was familiar with the surviving members of the imperial family, including Prince and Princess Félix Youssoupoff, who regularly invited him to their villa in Boulogne, then to the one on Rue Pierre Guérin in Paris. He also painted portraits of Princess Irina and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. Rzewuski's works are sought after, as they are few in number. His period of activity is indeed very short and lasts only at the beginning of the twenties. For in 1926, tired of the world, he chose to enter the orders and became a Dominican. He died in Venice in 1983.
