Ecole étrangère du XVIIIe siècle
Portrait of the young Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), posing in armour with the cord and star of the Order of the Garter. Miniature on copper, oval in shape, preserved under bevelled glass in a modern pink cloth frame. Good condition. At sight: H.: 10 cm - W.: 7.5 cm. Frame: H.: 15 cm - W.: 13 cm. History: The pretender to the throne of Scotland and England wanted to restore the rights of his family, usurped according to him by the families of Orange and Hanover. It was with this objective in mind that he embarked on 19 June 1745 at Bonne Anse in the Loire estuary and, with the help of the great shipowner of Irish origin Antoine Walsh, landed on an island in the Hebrides to undertake the reconquest of his kingdoms. The first months of this reconquest were marked by great successes against the army of the King of England, including the famous Battle of Prestonpans, on 21 September 1745, then came the time of failures which ended with the defeat of Culloden and the return to Brittany with the great Breton sailor Marion-Dufresne. The young hero of 1745 was to end his days in Italy under unfortunate conditions, but the memory of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" has remained alive in Scotland to this day.
