École Française du XIXe siècle
Portrait of the youth of Prince Philippe VII, Count of Paris (1838-1894). Pencil drawing and white chalk relief, signed lower right, unidentified, preserved in its modern giltwood frame, with an identification plate at the bottom. Good condition. At sight: H.: 29 cm - L.: 22 cm. Frame: H.: 49 cm - L.: 40.5 cm. History: this drawing was made around 1841, on the occasion of the baptism of the son of the Duke of Orleans, the Count of Paris, at Notre-Dame. The cathedral does not appear in the background of this drawing, as in the lithographed version published according to this drawing some time after the event. It is also interesting to see in this drawing the sword created by Jean-Baptiste Klagmann under the direction of Froment-Meurice. It is currently in the Musée Carnavalet (reference: OM3242, inv. OA 209). This masterpiece of Parisian goldsmithing was offered by the municipality of the City of Paris to the young Count of Paris on the occasion of his baptism, celebrated on May 2, 1841 at Notre-Dame. Various allegorical figures (War, Justice, Prudence, Force) and symbols (arms of the prince and the City of Paris, Gallic cock), recalling the virtues of a prince and the City of Paris, make up the pommel, rocket and joining bow and are decorated with diamonds, sapphires, rubies, pearls and enamels. In his will of 18 April 1878, the Count of Paris, Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (1838-1894) bequeathed his sword to his eldest son, Philippe d'Orléans (1869-1926) who, in his will dated 26 November 1922, bequeathed it to the City of Paris. Reference: in the sale of the estate of Prince Henri d'Orléans, Count of Paris, dated 30 October 2000, under nos. 63 and 64 appear two other drawings by the artist representing his sister the Queen of the Belgians.
