HANDMANN Jakob-Emanuel (1718-1781), attribué à
Portrait of Albrecht Fredrich von Erlach, Lord of Hindelbank (1696-1788), dressed as a colonel of the Cuirassiers Regiment, in 1752. Oil on canvas, unsigned, preserved in its original Louis XVI-style carved and gilt wood frame. On the back are numerous handwritten annotations, old, in black stone, by two different hands, specifying the biographical data and the service record of the model, then, at the bottom right, "Handmann / pinx. 1752". Time wear, accidents, as is. At sight: H.: 112 cm - L.: 78.5 cm. Frame: H.: 130 cm - L.: 97.5 cm. History: Albrecht Friedrich came from one of Bern's most illustrious patrician families. He was the son of Jerome d'Erlach (1667-1748), a strong personality, a statesman of exceptional qualities, the first Bernese landowner of his time, the avoyer of Bern, and so on, from whom he inherited the title of Count of the Empire. He had a career as brilliant as that of his father: first in the military career, then in politics. He was lord of Hindelbank, Jegenstorf, Urtenen, Bäriswil and Mattstetten, officer in the Tillier regiment in the service of Austria, captain in 1715, then colonel of cuirassiers. In Bern, member of the Grand Council (1727), amman of the town house (1729), bailiff of Morges (1735), member of the Petit Conseil (1755), treasurer of the Pays romand (1758), several times avoyer between 1759 and 1786. He had the Hôtel d'Erlach, probably the most prestigious of Bern's mansions, completed between 1748 and 1752. He received many titles and distinctions: Chamberlain to Emperor Charles VI of Austria in 1735, Knight of the Baden Order of St. Hubert in 1748, Grand Cross of the Order of the Red Eagle in 1773. Decorations which can be seen on our portrait. The archives of the Burgerbibliothek Bern keep photographic records of many portraits of Albrecht Friedrich at all stages of his life, from his childhood to the height of his career.
