FRAGMENT FROM A JACKET CARRIED BY THE YOUNG... - Lot 20 - Coutau-Bégarie
FRAGMENT FROM A JACKET CARRIED BY THE YOUNG LOUIS XVII (1785-1795) DURING HIS CAPTIVITY AT THE TEMPLE FROM 1792 to 1793. In old pink woollen serge, held by a red wax seal with the arms of France and noted "Fermes du roi", applied to a sheet of paper bearing the handwritten inscription: "... during his detention at the Temple in 1792 and 93". Bears on the back a later handwritten inscription: "Relic kept by Madame de Rambaud, one of Louis XVII's governors from his birth in Versailles to the Temple. She gave it to Naundorff during the Restoration, along with other souvenirs of the Dauphin when she took it into her home. This relic was then kept by the Naundorff family in the castle of Henegauen, then after the war in 1914, when this castle was bombed, in Belgium". The whole is preserved in a modern gilded wooden frame. Traces of humidity, but good general condition. At sight: H.: 4.5 cm - W.: 13 cm. Frame: H.: 18 cm - W.: 23.5 cm. Provenance: former collection of Mrs Agathe de Rambaud (1764-1853), chambermaid of the Children of France, then lullaby of the Duke of Normandy who became Dauphin of France on the death of his elder brother, and for whom she took care of him from his birth until his entry into the Temple prison.
