GABRIEL Georges (1775-1846), attribué à
Bust portrait of the Princess of Lamballe (1749-1792) in the prison of La Force, in 1792. Pencil drawing signed at the bottom right of the artist's monogram with identification of the place at the top right "La Force 1792", preserved in its period gilded wooden frame. Traces of humidity, as is. At sight: H.: 19.5 cm - L.: 16 cm. Frame: H.: 37 cm - L.: 32 cm. Reference: the Louvre Museum keeps another version of this well-known drawing depicting the imprisoned Princess de Lamballe, but which seems less accomplished than the version we present. Ours is moreover signed with the artist's initial "G" and located "La Forge 1792". Before it was donated to the Louvre Museum, its last owner was Georges Clemenceau. Other versions of this portrait are known, one of which is in the municipal library of Versailles and whose details are closer to our version which is also signed and identified. Finally, in 1845 Jules Perreau published an engraving inspired by Gabriel's version of the drawing, which, due to certain details, may lead us to believe that our drawing was the model. History: The prison of La Force was a private mansion which was transformed into a detention house and served as a prison for the city of Paris between 1780 and 1845. It was here that the Princess de Lamballe was imprisoned from August 19 until the morning of her death on September 3, 1792.
