KREMLIN'S SERVICE. Imperial Manufactory,... - Lot 346 - Coutau-Bégarie
KREMLIN'S SERVICE. Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, 1897. Hard porcelain pot on pedestal, with polychrome decoration, representing in the center in a cartouche the double-headed eagle of the Romanoffs under imperial crown, on a green background, surrounded by rose and garlands of polychrome flowers on a gold background. The outer part is decorated with flowers and foliage colored in reserves on a gold background. Very slight wear and tear. Green marks on the reverse: N. II. (Nicholas II), under imperial crown, dated 1897. H. : 9,5 cm - Diam. : 22 cm. History : this compotier was made during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II (1894-1917), in order to complete the magnificent Kremlin service ordered in 1836 by his ancestor, Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855), to the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Saint Petersburg. The decoration was designed by the painter Feodor Solntsev (1801-1892), a great connoisseur of ancient Russian art. He was inspired by various motifs from Russian medieval art, directly borrowed from the enamelled gold plates made by the Kremlin workshops in 1667 for Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich. This service was regularly used in the Kremlin Palace for coronations, diplomatic evenings and large banquets in honour of the cadets of the imperial army.
