ALEXANDRIA SERVICE OF THE IMPERATOR ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA (17 - Lot 344
ALEXANDRIA SERVICE OF THE IMPERATOR ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA (1798-1860) Imperial Manufactory, St Petersburg, 1897. Hard porcelain soup plate with gold border, decorated on the top of the rim with a polychrome coat of arms representing a sword passing through a crown of roses on a blue shield surrounded by the inscription in Cyrillic characters: "For the faith, the tsar and the fatherland". This coat of arms was created for the sovereign by the poet Vasily Zhukovsky (1783-1852), in memory of the nickname given to the princess during her childhood: "white rose", named after the heroine of the novel The Magic Ring by the German writer Friedrich de Lamotte-Fouqué (1777-1843), published in 1813. Good condition. Green marks on reverse: N.II. (Nicholas II), under imperial crown, dated 1897. Diameter: 24 cm. History: the pieces of this service were made at the request of the wife of Tsar Nicholas I, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, for the Alexandria cottage, the sovereign's summer residence on the Peterhof estate, built in 1829. Porcelain and crystal services were ordered from the Imperial Manufactory. All the pieces of these sets are decorated with the coat of arms of the residence: an azure shield with a sword in pale form enfiled by a crown of white roses. Each set, intended for 24 people, consists of approximately 5,000 pieces. Throughout the following reigns, this service was regularly supplemented and replaced by the imperial porcelain factory.
