History: This basket was made during the reign of Emperor Nicholas I (1825-1855), by the Imperial Porcelain Factory of St. Petersburg, in order to complete the magnificent service offered by King Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), to the Crown Grand Duke Paul Petrovitch of Russia, on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, future Empress Catherine II, celebrated in St. Petersburg, on August 21, 1745. At the end of the 19th century, most of this service was kept at the Gatchina Palace, the country residence of the Russian Tsars. According to the inventory drawn up in 1884, the service consisted of 357 pieces. After the revolution, some pieces were still in Gatchina. Then in the early 1930s, through the Antikvariat, a state organization created by the Soviet government, a large part of this service was put up for sale.
