SERVICE OF GRAND DUKE PAUL PETROVITCH. OFFERED BY KING FEDERIC II OF PRUSSIA. Porcelain Manufactory, Berlin, circa 1778. Hard porcelain presentation dish, bordered by an openwork gallery enhanced by a gold fillet, with central decoration of a polychrome double-headed eagle surmounted by an imperial crown holding in its claws a coat of arms of the Romanoffs and a coat of arms of the Holstein-Gottorp house. Slight wear and tear, but overall very good condition. Blue marks on the reverse: sceptre. L.: 33 cm - W.: 25.5 cm. History: This presentation piece is part of the magnificent service offered by King Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), to the Crown Grand Duke Paul Petrovitch of Russia, on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, future Empress Catherine II, celebrated in St. Petersburg, August 21, 1745. At the end of the 19th century, most of this service was kept at the Gatchina Palace, the country residence of the Russian Tsars. According to the inventory drawn up in 1884, the service consisted of 357 pieces. After the revolution, some pieces were still in Gatchina. Then in the early 1930s, through the Antikvariat, a state organization created by the Soviet government, a large part of this service was put up for sale.
