ELISABETH FÉODOROVNA, Grand Duchess of Russia (1864-1918). Portrait of Princess Zenaïde Youssoupoff, Countess Soumarokoff-Elston (1861-1939). Pastel on paper signed upper left in Cyrillic characters "Elisabeth, Ilinskoye", dated 1892, preserved under glass in its original giltwood frame. Good condition. Sight: H.: 62.5 cm - W.: 46 cm. Frame: H.: 70 cm - W.: 53.5 cm. History: This portrait is a unique representation of the artistic talent of the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, born Princess of Hesse and the Rhine, sister of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia and married to the uncle of Nicholas II, the Grand Duke Sergius Alexandrovich. It was painted in IlinskoïÉ, near Moscow, the private residence of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Serge, close to the Arkhangelskoïe Palace, property of the Youssoupoffs. Provenance: this painting was in Prince Youssoupoff's bedroom, opposite his bed, on the boudoir side, on the first floor of his Parisian residence located at 38 rue Pierre-Guérin, as can be seen in the photo on the right behind Princess Irina and on page 52.
