LARGE ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY THE FRENCH COMPOSER JOSEPH ARBAN Rectangular in shape, bound in purple silk velvet, decorated on the cover with a large oval medallion in black lacquered papier-mâché depicting a peasant woman in traditional dress holding her daughter in her arms, in a malachite veneer frame. On the reverse side appear the initials I. A. (Joseph Arban) in gold letters and the date: April 24, 1873. With gilt metal side closing ties, 21 gilt pages on edges. This album was given to Joseph Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889), French music composer, as a souvenir of his career in St. Petersburg by his colleagues and friends who had marked his career. It contains 107 photographic portraits in cabinet and carte de visite format of famous people from the world of music and the stage who worked with Arban, some of which bear autograph dedications signed by the people depicted. Opening several portraits depict Arban, his wife and children, the concert team and soloists at the Champs-Élysées, Johann Strauss (1804-1849), Austrian composer and conductor, with a signed autograph dedication: "To my dear colleague Arban, Johann Strauss"; probably Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881), Russian composer, with a signed autograph dedication: "To my friend Arban, Peterhof, 14 June 1873"; Joseph Gungl (1809-1889), German composer and conductor, with a signed autograph dedication in German: "Frankfurt, 5/4/81, Joseph Gungl"; Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870), with a signed autograph dedication: "To Arban, sincere compliments, Mérimée"; Fromental Halévy (1799-1862), French composer; Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896), French composer; Kéler Béla (1820-1882), Hungarian composer, with a signed autograph dedication: "To my famous and very kind colleague Arban, Wiesbaden, 4 April 1865, Kéler Béla" and on another photograph he writes: "To my dear colleague the famous conductor J B. Arban, souvenir amical, Kéler Béla, Paris, 21 June 1878"; Edouard Strauss (1835-1916), Austrian composer, with a signed autograph dedication: "To my dear colleague and friend M. Arban, by Edouard Strauss"; Richard Wagner (1813-1883), German composer; Alexandre Edouard Goria (1823-1860); Pierre Quidant (1815-1893); Henry Litolff (1818-1891), pianist-composer, with a signed autograph dedication: "To my dear friend and colleague Arban, from his affectionate Henry Litolff"; Charles Gounod (1818-1893), French composer; Michel Obrescoff, general-major (1821-1884); Ch Lanzerini, musician; Antony Bernier, conductor; etc. Work of the House of J.
