Henri Martin, tamer of wild animals, around... - Lot 184 - Coutau-Bégarie
Henri Martin, tamer of wild animals, around 1840-1850 Rare folded fan, the double sheet in lithographed paper, enhanced in colors. The face presents the famous Henri Martin (1793-1882), lying down with the lion "Nero", and the tiger "Atir". On the left he is taming a lioness, on the right a hyena. Martin was one of the first lion tamers, and founded the Rotterdam Zoo. In 1831, in the "Almanach des Spectacles", we read: "The menagerie of Mr. Martin, rue Basse-Saint-Denis, Hôtel Boufflers, rue de Choiseul, 12. We see two lions, a Bengal tiger, an Asian hyena and a Peruvian llama. Each one is tamed and plays with its master". Reverse in pink paper. Wooden frame, black lacquered with gold Chinese decoration. H.t. 27,3 cm / H.f. 16,4 cm (cuts in the leaf, wear, rest., a fold is missing)
