Carnival Day, ca. 1760-1770 Folded fan, the... - Lot 97 - Coutau-Bégarie
Carnival Day, ca. 1760-1770 Folded fan, the skin sheet painted with gouache of a city view, probably Paris, along the ramparts bordering the boulevards. On the cobblestones, a chariot has just passed through one of the city gates. It is pulled by two figures, one dressed as a Chinese, the other as a Turk with a turban. Under a canopy, a young woman dressed in white advances, holding a fancy scepter in hand. She is accompanied by drummers, a violinist and a trumpet player. Curious people have stopped to watch them pass. This masquerade evokes the popular parades at carnival time. Wallpaper reverse of a couple in a country setting. Mounting in ivory cut, pierced, engraved, painted and gilded of a couple on either side of a flowery cartel. H.t. 27 cm - H.f. 12,2 cm (wear, restorations) Provenance: label with the reference "1925" of the former collection Henry-René d'Allemagne (1863-1950).
