Charles-Emile Wattier (1800-1868), "L'Embuscade", circa 1860-1870 Preparatory sketch in pencil on paper, for a fan leaf. A host of loves are hurrying, each one firing its arrows, towards a couple enamored at the center of the composition. Signed lower left "Emile Wattier inv.". Bears the handwritten title "The Ambush". At the place of the throat, handwritten mention in pencil: "Executed for Alexandre and /bought by Lord Granville". H. 32.5 cm x W. 55.5 cm N.B.: S. Blondel mentions Wattier's leaf called "L'embuscade" in his reference work, "Histoire des éventails (...)", 1875, p. 190. Wattier worked for Empress Eugenie's fansmith, Félix Alexandre.
