Ode to Love, circa 1860 Exceptional white... - Lot 233 - Coutau-Bégarie
Ode to Love, circa 1860 Exceptional white mother-of-pearl frame very finely pierced, carved, engraved, burgundy and gilded. In the center, composition of 7 characters on a ship background showing Paris taking Helen away. On the sides, loves on a chariot pulled by lions. Lovebirds and a helmeted soldier are sculpted on the plumes. The sheet, made of skin-lined paper, is painted with gouache of a scene in the taste of the 18th century. In front of Hymen on a cloud, two lovers are preparing to exchange their consent, surrounded by a joyful assembly. Reverse: gilded rocaille ornaments. H.t. 28 cm-H.F. 13.4 cm (slight accidents) In its original box covered with garnet leather, decorated with a ducal crown, and bearing under the lid the address of "Vanier Chardin/ Eventailliste/ 19 rue Auber/ Paris". N.B.: the exceptional work on the mother-of-pearl is identical to that of a frame by the same sculptor, illustrated with Hector's farewell to Andromache. It was executed for the fansmith Félix Alexandre. The fan is now in the collections of the Greenwich Fan Museum. See "A Masked Ball", cat. 12, p. 53 in H. Alexander, "Alexander, Fan-maker to the Courts of Europe", The Fan Museum, 2012.
