Covered shuttle vase in grey jasper, the body decorated with a neo-gothic frieze, the lid with a foliated catch, it rests on a wide rectangular base. Russian work circa 1830. THE WHOLE SCENE EXHALES A DELICIOUS FRAISHING write the Goncourt brothers during their 1852 Salon critique about Gérôme's work that has now been rediscovered. Our painting belonged to the prestigious collection of Etienne Moreau-Nélaton, an important donor of works by Corot, Delacroix and impressionists to the Louvre and author of the catalogues raisonnés of Corot with Robaut, as well as the engraved work of Manet. Presented at the 1852 Salon, it was acclaimed by critics as an excellent archaeological reconstruction. In 1843, Gérôme, a young pupil of Paul Delaroche, accompanied his master to Italy. There he was enthusiastic about antiquity, particularly the architecture and objects excavated in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. On his return to Paris, he joined Charles Gleyre's workshop for three months to prepare for the Prix de Rome, then returned to Delaroche's workshop on his return from Rome. His antiquated passion is reflected in Young Greeks Fighting Cocks (Musée d'Orsay), which received a laudatory commentary from the poet and critic Théophile Gautier and an unexpected triumph at the 1847 salon: Gérôme has just painted the manifesto painting of young artists, the Neo-Greeks (Hamon, Picou, Boulanger, Papety and Toulmouche). True to the Ingress-like aesthetic, however, they treat antiquity in a familiar, intimate and sensual rather than heroic tone. In the classical tradition of archaeological precision, Jean-Léon Gérôme describes the ruins of the Doric temple of Hera.
