Poly-lobed tortoiseshell box quilted with... - Lot 105 - Coutau-Bégarie
Poly-lobed tortoiseshell box quilted with gold and mother-of-pearl. The lid is decorated with an antique scene in ruins. The interior presents a small retractable tray decorated with stylized birds on a background of a geometric pattern called "à la Bérain". Very beautiful Neapolitan work, circa 1725-1735, attributed to the workshops of Giuseppe Sarao. (a small missing piece, very good condition) H. 5.2 cm - W. 11 cm. The Sarao dynasty in Naples is one of the best workshops for quilted tortoiseshell objects. They will acquire a great talent in the art of quilting and in their decorations ranging from the pure "Bérain" decoration to a lightening with more important figures on an airy background. Bibliography: A. Kugel, "Complètement Piqué, Le fol art de l'écaille à la cour de Naples", Editions Monelle Hayot, 2018. This specimen made from parts and fragments of scales of Cheloniidae spp. is well before June 1, 1947. It is classified in Appendix I under the Washington Convention, in Appendix A of European Community Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996, as well as in the French Environmental Code. However, for an exit from the EU, a CITES re-export will be necessary, this being the responsibility of the future buyer.
