Christ in poplar carved in the round and... - Lot 108 - Coutau-Bégarie
Christ in poplar carved in the round and polychromed. Head tilted on the right shoulder, right arm raised almost vertically and the left stretched horizontally, torso with wound on the side, perizonium tied and falling on the right hip, parallel legs. Northern Italy, Genoa, first third of the 18th century, workshop of Anton Maria Maragliano (1664- 1739) H. 100 cm (resumption of the polychromy) Anton Maria Maragliano was a Genoese sculptor of the Baroque period and produced numerous religious subjects, notably for the confraternities of the city of Genoa, who commissioned him to make statues to be carried in procession. His workshop was very active and he was succeeded by his own son who established himself in Lisbon and Cadiz. The soft polychromy, but above all the off-axis position of the dead Christ, hanging from the wood of the cross, whose body sags to one side, accentuates the dramatization of the torture that the Baroque period carefully dramatized. Maragliano pushes this dramaturgy to the extreme and thus gave to the Genoese baroque art a very identifiable powerful quality.
