Bénigne Gagneraux (1756-1795)
The lion hunt Oil on canvas 43,5 x 54,5 cm Our painting is related to the famous composition that Bénigne Gagneraux painted, the year of his death, for the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1795. The Tuscan painting was part of the Uffizi collection, and then disappeared during the Second World War in storage in Pistoia. A prestigious commission and the first work by the Dijon artist to enter a public collection, it was certainly famous, which explains the many known autograph versions, with variations and different formats, including one in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon (89.6 x 112 cm; inv. 2012-9-1).
