G***, J.-A. [MAILLET, Benoit de]
Telliamed ou entretien d'un philosophe indien avec un missionnaire français Amsterdam, chez l'Honoré et fils, 1748. 2 volumes in one in-8, full calf with arms on the corners of the boards, smooth spine decorated with a semis of fleurons, title page. A fragile spine, worn corners. T1 - Title, (8), CXIX, 208 pp. T2 - Title, 231, (2) pp. Small hole on last page. Binding with Breteuil arms. First edition of this scientific-utopian work, announcing Darwin. Dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac, Telliamed (anagram of "de Maillet", name of the author) is one of the first speculations on the origin and structure of the globe. His hypotheses on sedimentation, fossils, the transformation of marine animals into terrestrial animals caused a scandal. This explains why the volume was not published until 10 years after the author's death. Maillet also believed in the existence of men living in the sea and cites a number of testimonies, including the appearance of a marine man on the shores of the Isle du Diamant in Martinique. Caillet, 7010; Quérard V, 442.
