Bound in arms History of the Royal Society of Medicine. Ann. M.DCCC.LXXXII and 1st part of M.DCC.LXXXIII. With the Memoirs of medicine and medical physics for these same years... Paris, Théophile Barrois, 1787; in-4, 19 x 25 cm, contemporary binding in fawn calf, large gilt fillet in frame, gilt corner fleurons and central arms, gilt on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt designs, double gilt fillet on the edges, inner gilt border, gilt edges. Volume 5 only (out of ten) of the memoirs of the Royal Society of Medicine. The Royal Society of Medicine was born in 1778 from the merger of several scientific commissions. Dozens of these commissions, covering the whole field of scientific knowledge, had been encouraged by the Baron de Breteuil during his ministry in order to advise the State in these fields and to promote the development of a true public service. Illustrated with an engraved plate. With several folded tables. Present copy in a binding with the arms with motto in small irons of the baron de Breteuil (unknown to OHR, close to iron 1). Ex-libris of the baron de Breteuil on the first counterplate and ex-libris of Anne-Charles, duc de Montmorency (1768-1846) who had married the only granddaughter of the minister, on the front of the first flyleaf. A good copy. Upper spine split, lower corners rubbed, headpieces torn off. Angular staining to first few leaves. -B23
