Borghese Gladiator in patinated bronze. First half of the 17th century. H. : 33.5cm Black marble and red porphyry base. L. : 32.5cm The antique marble (Louvre Museum) was first mentioned in 1611, just after its discovery in Nettuno and before it entered the Borghese collection. In 1807, it was acquired by Napoleon I, along with many of the antiques in the Borghese collection. In the seventeenth century, the model was very successful, and smaller versions were cast in large numbers. A golden version was even mentioned around 1700 in the Borghese collections.
