Justin Pierre OUVRIÉ (1806-1879)
Military camp in front of the château de Vincennes, with the keep and the holy chapel. Oil on panel 18 x 22.8 cm. This view of the château de Vincennes under the Second Empire reminds us of the still very operational function of this fortress dating back to the reign of Charles V. There was then an arsenal and "L'école à feu" (the school of fire), for the artillery, which could be practised in the Polygon de tir (firing range), not far away. Justin Ouvrié, an eminent painter of urban views and picturesque sites, a tireless traveller to England, Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland, knew Vincennes well. In 1864, at the request of Baron Haussmann, the artist produced a series of 40 engraved views showing the development of the Bois de Vincennes, with "the most interesting sites of the wonderful park that the Emperor has offered to the inhabitants of the popular suburb". His painting representing Le Chalet de la Porte-Jaune, in the Bois de Vincennes is in the Musée Carnavalet (inv. P1306). In the sale of his studio on 21 December 1874 (Drouot, room 4, Me Couturier) we also find two views of Vincennes painted by him, and several in photographs, which the artist had kept in his personal collection.
