Cornelis van POELENBURGH (1594-1667)
Diana at the bath, surrounded by nymphs, in a dense forest at dusk Oil on canvas 70 x 94 cm. A student of Abraham Blomaert in Haarlem, Van Poelenburgh spent a seminal period in Italy between 1617 and 1625. Influenced by Adam Elsheimer, he was interested in landscape and ruins. In Rome, he co-founded a brotherhood of Dutch-speaking Italian painters, of which he was the leader: the Bentvueghels. A tireless worker, his work met with success and spread to many nations (Rome, Florence, England, Bohemia, the Netherlands), so much so that Félibien, in 1685, wrote of him that there were few painting cabinets that did not display at least one work by his hand. Diana in the bath, surrounded by nymphs, is by far his favourite subject, which he depicted more than thirty times, with an ever-renewed graphic formula. His nickname among the Bentvueghels was "Satyr". Our painting, with its autumnal tones, is distinguished by its unusually large size and its twilight atmosphere.
