Harpy pendant in enameled gold and Baroque... - Lot 178 - Coutau-Bégarie
Harpy pendant in enameled gold and Baroque pearls, standing on a branch with wings spread. Suspension chain. Probably Italian, late 16th century. Gross weight: 16.03 grs Height with setting: 9.6 cm (Two pearls missing) During the Renaissance, jewelry was a symbol of power. The greats of Europe's kingdoms wore them on rich garments. This pendant can be compared with a number of pendants in the Louvre, whose preciousness and refinement rival their technical sophistication. Mythology was a major source of inspiration for jewelers of the period. The theme of the harpy was often repeated. This taste for Renaissance jewelry was revived in the 19th century. Froment-Meurice, a major jeweler of the period, drew inspiration from models similar to our own.
